The key to budgeting is to work as much as you can to save as much money as you can and then spend it very slowly. With the following tips, I backpacked Mexico for 6 months and averaged my spending to about $7/day.
STAY FOR FREE: Use cheap/free places to stay. Try Couchsurfing, WWOOF, Airbnb & house sitting.
EAT FOR CHEAP. Buy food on the street as opposed to the grocery store. I’ve eaten street food all over Mexico and it’s delicious and cheap. It’s about $0.50 USD for a couple delicious tacos or a tub of freshly cut fruit on the street. Fresh veggies off the street are also super cheap! Carry a little bag of pre-mixed spices with you. I carry a little mixed bag of garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, salt and pepper to season my veggies. Never had a problem getting sick from the food. Maybe from eating too much of the food, from not from the food itself.
FLY FOR FREE. Accumulate airline miles and points for free flights. Apply for credit cards whose bonus points are high. My recommendation is to shoot for 40,000-50,000 points *that can be used on any airline* (ask which airlines they can be used on). Others like Southwest are good for domestic cheap flights. My favorite credit cards for this are: British Airways, Capital OneVenture, Barclaycard, Southwest & Chase sapphire.
TAKE PART IN AFFORDABLE CULTURAL EXPERIENCES. Go see museums, archaeological sites, national parks, and national treasures & famous landmarks.
CARPOOL. Apps like Blablacar are great for carpool. It’s about half the cost of the bus!
USE TRAVEL FRIENDLY CREDIT/DEBIT CARDS that do not charge foreign transaction fees and reimburse ATM fees. For your debit card use Schwab.
SPLURGE RARELY & ENJOY IT WHEN YOU DO! =)
HAPPY TRAVELS =)
